A Portion of Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood Suffers Fire Damage
1937 Lodge Partially Destroyed in Three-Alarm Fire
Historic Structure Featured in "The Shining" Impacted
On April 18, a portion of the iconic Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon was heavily damaged in a three-alarm fire that broke out around 11:00 p.m. The lodge, built in 1937 and situated approximately 6000 feet up the 11,249-foot mountain, is renowned for its architectural significance and its appearance in the opening scenes of Stanley Kubrick's film "The Shining."
Firefighters from multiple agencies responded to the blaze, which was contained to a single wing of the lodge. The extent of the damage is still under assessment, but authorities have confirmed that the main lodge building and restaurant were spared.
"We're grateful that the main lodge and restaurant were not impacted," said Timberline Lodge General Manager Mike Berry. "Our focus now is on working with investigators to determine the cause of the fire and begin the rebuilding process."
The Timberline Lodge is a beloved landmark in Oregon and a popular destination for skiers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts. It is expected to remain closed for the time being while repairs are conducted.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office.
